Gena's beautiful and genuine smile caught my attention. Immediately, I knew I had met someone special - someone who was happy!

The staff was warm and friendly... the coffee was amazing! After just moments of pleasantries, Gena asked me, "Are you a hairdresser?" As I later found out, Gena too, had been a hairdresser. The rest is history!

THE HUMAN BEAN is located at:

8050 S. Virginia St. (across from In-N-Out Burger).

To visit The Human Bean on-line, GO TO:

http://thehumanbean.com/SectionIndex.asp?SectionID=9

Try it... you'll like it!

As I got to know Gena more-and-more each day due to the convenience of THE HUMAN BEAN drive through, great coffee and first-rate service, I invited her to join me on my Health and Beauty Segment because she had a story, which I felt needed to be shared.

For those of you who may have missed our Thursday morning live interview, the following is an outline of what we discussed:

In Gena's own words:

Finding the “why” for me is more of finding the “what”…..

What is really important in life? Never lose focus on these things. You don’t get to live life over and if you do get a second chance at anything, live it to the fullest.

The “how to”….

1. Your past can motivate and inspire or it can cripple you. Don’t let others actions define how you live. It is your choice if you will grow or shrivel from life’s experiences. Moving forward is a choice. Living inside of mistakes, regret or hurt will stunt you, but choosing to break out of these things will propel you forward if you choose….

2. When you know something is right (after research, advice and planning) jump in. Don’t be foolish, but do be brave.

3. Be the best at whatever it is you do. Have pride (don’t be prideful) and have passion. Don’t waste time on something uninspiring.

4. Surround yourself with positive people. Friends and family are a necessary support because a new adventure will always have its challenging moments.

5. Attitude is everything. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.

All of these points helped me to move from one career to the next. Being a hairdresser was motivating, inspiring, creative and fun, but having the chance to be a parent was my definition of success, and when Nevaeh was born, well she is definitely my passion. The chance to be involved in the Human bean is a great thrill, because it is the future for our families and working side by side with my husband makes me appreciate him even more. It is challenging and a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but the relationships being built and the fun make it all worth it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/R47E0iznm_I/AAAAAAAAAxc/purjDh9V45Y/s400/7-16-06_Lithia_Park.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5156275030361349106" />
I believe the most important role of being a parent is to give your child courage, strength, and mostly compassion. We need to take it seriously that as a parent you are helping to sculpt a human being! We need to teach them to look outside of themselves and not live in a small selfish bubble. We need to give them value, worth and treasure them. Respect and be kind to them, even more so than you would a business associate or friend, and never forget that discipline is part of helping them to grow and learn. If you get to be home with your kids full time, know you are valuable and take as much time as you can to simply be with them. Make sure your kids, and everyone else in your life for that matter, know how much you love them.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/R47FgCznnAI/AAAAAAAAAxk/69RTIjImQsI/s400/7-16-06_3_Lithia_Park.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5156275777685658626" />
I would challenge others to answer these questions and frequently think about their response.

1. Imagine living life backwards, how would this help you define success? What can I do today to propel me to that success?

2. What is good in my life?

3. What can I do today to bless someone else?

4. What would I regret not doing today if this was my last day alive?

5. What is my life motto?

Because I believe success is different for everyone, I believe being focused on the good things makes a person more successful and making your life count for something is a true measure of success.

Kindest regards, Gena Hansen

Gena presented me with a writing her father gave her, on ATTITUDE by Charles Swindoll. I can attest, this is the Gena Hansen I know:

ATTITUDE

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more than just facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you, we are al in charge of our attitudes.

~ Charles Swindoll

Thank you Gena and Scott Hansen, (to Gena I've given the title of: The Coffee Princess), The Human Bean Staff, and thank you to (all of the listeners) for making THE ALICE 96.5 "Health and Beauty" Segment into the Top 10 for 2007.

Sincerely,

Dorlon Peckham
Genesis Salon
250 Crummer Lane
Reno, NV 89502
775-828-9797
www.genesisreno.com

A "NEW KIND" OF NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION! Making Your Pearls Count for Something!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/R2fQbbwOTJI/AAAAAAAAAw4/haIkJxthiPM/s400/LuckyOliver-5417030-blog-2008_gold_3d.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145310269019147410" />
I recently saw a bumper sticker that read: "God, please save me from Your followers!"

Since 9/11, Americans have come to realize many things. My personal realization? Americans may not be as loved as I once thought we were. Still, America is were dreams can come true! Regardless of the many problems we face in this great country, people like being here - people from other countries want to move here - chances are you and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Currently, global warming is just one more of the "what ifs" we get to add to our list of things to worry about.

I believe we all want a better tomorrow for ourselves, as well as, generations to come. Is it possible?

As of Tuesday December 18, 2008 at 6:00 a.m., the world population was: 6,770,377,007.

On January 1, 1970, the world population was: 3,912,231,043

On January 1, 2020, the world population will reach: 8,056,448,722

By 2035, we will reach 10 billion people trying to coexist on planet earth!

We won't hear any of the current presidential WANNABEs discussing population. It is a very unpopular subject - it's tabu! Regardless, by the numbers shown above, it is the number one threat to our future. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but soon.

Have you made your New Year's resolution yet? Lose a few pounds? Start working out? Try to be more patient with your significant other?

While these are noble goals, we are facing much bigger challenges than "SELF." We know this, but as of yet, we have not been given the tools (mind-set) to address our current situation.

Everyday, more laws are being written to try and control a world that appears to be, out-of-control. Our prison system is overcrowded - the warehousing of souls waiting to get out to commit the same or more serious crimes. Prison gives the prisoners time to plan their future. Not a conducive place to plan one's future - do ya think?

Underlying the stresses we are experiencing today, is fear. Many people have given up and have become cynical. They believe the government wants us to be afraid so it can more effectively control us. This may be true. Who cares?

"There is nothing I can do about anything," is a current and common conceptual misnomer. I disagree. There is something we can do about! How? By gaining a higher, and better perspective of our individualize power to LOVE.

Joseph Campbell, in his PBS series with Bill Moyers titled, The Power of Myth, informs us that at the highest concepts of all world religions, is LOVE. The problem is, as a society, our definition of LOVE is limited or distorted. I love a chocolate sundae. I love football. I love the sweater you bought me for Christmas. I love you. I love...

Somehow, the English language has limited our understanding and the ability to conceptualize the kind of LOVE Joseph Campbell was referring to. I will present one of my favorite definitions Mr. Campbell shared. It's also one most Americans have heard at some point in their lives.

One definition of Divine Love:

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

This definition has nothing to do with religion - it has to do with common sense. If we don't make the connection at some point, there won't be much to discuss.

In an earlier broadcast, I discussed The Pearl Planner®. The concepts contained within THE PEARL PLANNER® provide faith, hope and LOVE. Investing your Pearls everyday, every hour, every moment... such as, mentoring a child, visiting with a lonely person, contributing...

THE PEARL PLANNER® provides the guidelines to define our choices. Overtime, the fear becomes less and less. You are INVESTING your Pearls into something or someone worthwhile. INVESTING in yourself, is INVESTING in the world.

I will reprint a segment of THE PEARL PLANNER® from an earlier blog entry. When making your New Year's resolutions this year, consider the possibilities of your RETURN ON INVESTMENT of your eight daily pearls.

THE PEARL PLANNER®
MAKING YOUR PEARLS COUNT FOR SOMETHING

Let's do some Pearl Planner® math:

Eight hours of your day is taken up by sleep - you now have 16 hours left.

Another eight hours is taken up by eating, personal hygiene, waiting in-line at Starbucks for your Latte, and other similar stuff (aka etc.)

Now you have eight hours left for your Pearl Planner® Priorities™. Here's where your "Pearl Power™" kicks in! (Yes, this could include your time at the office).

Here's how THE PEARL PLANNER® can work for you!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Ry4tUwxbbbI/AAAAAAAAAtU/ThRRzvPEUts/s200/LuckyOliver-2375487-blog-sleeping.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129086860334427570" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RzCOgQxbbqI/AAAAAAAAAvI/d_TW_W_x-gw/s200/LuckyOliver-3690564-blog-black_pearl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129756660484239010" />

Each morning when you wake up, imagine you are given EIGHT PEARLS. These EIGHT PEARLS are your gift from the COSMOS to use in only one of five ways.

1. You can "invest" your pearls.
2. You can "spend" your pearls.
3. You can "waste" your pearls.
4. You can "lose" your pearls.
5. You can have your pearls "stolen."

NOTE: You cannot "save" your pearls. You are given EIGHT for the day... And, more importantly, you are not guaranteed you will receive EIGHT PEARLS the next day. Nothing in life is guaranteed. These EIGHT PEARLS are your gift for today and for today only. God forbid anything should happen, but the reality is, today is all you've got.

EACH PEARL REPRESENTS ONE HOUR OF YOUR DAY. HOW "YOU CHOOSE" TO USE YOUR PEARLS IS STRICTLY UP TO YOU!

1. Investing a pearl. Remember, your pearl represents "one hour" of your day. Did you "spend" an hour with the kids or did you "invest" an hour with the kids. How was your pearl used?

If you invested an hour (pearl) with the kids, you may have work together on a project. If you spent an hour (pearl) with the kids, you may have simply been in the same proximity, but no exchange of building a meaningful relationship took place. Your pearl was spent, not invested.

What about you? How can you invest a "pearl" in yourself? Working out, eating right, getting enough rest, meditating, simply being? There are endless examples of what we all know we need to be better people.

What about work? Did you invest a pearl in building relationships at work? Or were you simply there?

What about your community? Do you just take and give nothing back?

What about your church? Do you spend an hour at church or do you invest your time in helping?

What about your parents? Do you spend time or invest time?

2. Spending a pearl. When we spend, we get something. But there is not return on our investment. Investing provides dividends. Spending provides stuff.

3. Wasting your pearl. Oftentimes, this has to do with wasting time on things that don't matter. E-mails that consume us. Cell phone messages that don't matter. Gossip and idol chit-chat about things we can do nothing about.

4. Losing a pearl. You may wonder where the time went? "Where did the time go," we will often hear people say. Lost pearls are the saddest of all.

5. Having your pearls stolen by a Pearl Thief™. This has to do with people or things that may seem important at the time. We may be tricked into thinking what we're doing matters. For example, have you ever met someone who continually consumes your time with his or her drama - complain, complain, complain? You've spent hours, days, months or even years trying to inform this person on how to make his or her life better; only to find out later, nothing has changed. Psychic vampires can suck the life out or you with their problems and endless mishaps. Remember, you only have eight pearls for the day and when someone steals your pearls, you don't have them to invest in things that matter most. Work projects and meaningless tasks can do the same. Busy work that means nothing! Doing, doing, doing, only to find out it was all for not!

SUMMARY:

THE PEARL PLANNER®

Making Choices in Using My Pearls

Today, I choose to invest as many of my eight pearls as I can to take me to my dreams so I may fall in love with my future.
As each hour passes, I use one pearl, never to be recaptured again.

Investing a pearl means I gain a return on my investment. Some examples: Working out, stopping an addiction, getting enough rest, eating right, building meaningful relationships, being a leader, mentoring a child, having productive meetings, learning a new skill, quality time with family and friends, visiting a sick or lonely person, planning a vacation, being present, planning for my future, planning for my children's education, developing dreams, taking personal responsibility.

Spending a pearl means you were simply there in the physical sense - the rest of you wasn't present.

Losing a pearl means you don't know where the time went.

Wasting a pearl means you used an hour in a completely meaningless way.

Having a pearl stolen is allowing something of absolutely no importance consume your time.

NOTE: Just because you're busy doesn't necessarily mean you are getting anything done. Solution: Walk away from the Pearl Thieves™ in your life...

TIME AND ENERGY

Traditional time-management systems only take into account, time. THE PEARL PLANNER® takes into account time, but also energy. In other words, how you use your time including energy output and energy return. Plus, there is another dimension to THE PEARL PLANNER® which provides you the opportunity to discern moment-by-moment, whether or not what your doing counts for something. And, whether certain people or projects need to be ejected from your life. Are there people who are renting space in your head that need to be evicted from the premises.

A good place to start investing your pearls are in people, places and things that deserve your pearls. Just 'cause someone needs vs. deserves, is a concept which will require a deep level of understanding on your part.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RzCqsQxbbrI/AAAAAAAAAvQ/t_iKW-csRJM/s400/LuckyOliver-1147713-blog-businesswoman.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129787652968246962" />

Once you realize the power of THE PEARL PLANNER®, your life will never be the same!

Happy New Year! The information Julie shared with me changed the direction of my career as a hairdesigner. I would now like to introduce you to one of my dearest and beautiful mentors...

MEET JULIE CUNNINGHAM

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RySGuQxba0I/AAAAAAAAAog/YzZiDMeR6gM/s400/DSC_9391L.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126370405188856642" />
Julie Cunningham Color©

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Julie Cunningham Color is dedicated to the total development of each person’s image potential. We believe achieving this goal of personal image attainment brings forth our finest personality characteristics and imparts confidence in every individual, as well as creating personal appearance organization unparalleled by other systems. To achieve our goal we follow this belief system:

COLOR ANALYSIS is a transforming process that imparts a radiance and credibility achieved no other way. It is the heart and soul of our system, it is based on strong color theory, and is grounded in the belief that each person is perfect exactly as they are.

MAKEUP is an essential part of an excellent color analysis program and is prescribed based on the same theories of personal harmony. Makeup chosen and applied properly enhances the person and looks natural. The person, the makeup, and the wardrobe create a synergism resulting in a total image enhancement that is achieved no other way. All women can learn to comfortably and beautifully use makeup.

INDIVIDUAL STYLE is a natural progression after color analysis. Style combines the unique personal coloring, physical characteristics, and personality essence of each person in one effective visual package. Each one of us has a wonderful style that is based on our individuality and can be developed using theories of harmony, color, design & personality. Style evolves and improves with age.

WARDROBE DEVELOPMENT SKILLS are integral to a good image and are based both on color theory and personal lifestyle. Dressing well is an art that can be taught, but accurate wardrobe knowledge is seldom distributed as it runs counter to the prevailing retail sales mentality. We remedy this unfortunate situation by teaching practical, personalized wardrobing guidelines.

ACCESSORY SKILLS are the crucial finishing touch to any personal image and give the polish and personality for which we strive. Correct accessories particularly flatter and strengthen the head and shoulders. Accessory skills are based on artistic principles which anyone can master, but few are taught.

IMAGE PROFESSIONALS charge appropriate fees. We are theory based, not product driven, image professionals. We have a reason for every bit of advice we offer our clients, based on principles of design, line, color, shape, and personality type. We charge appropriate fees for the personalized services that we offer.

Image consulting, done correctly, is a transforming, confidence building gift to others. We do it because we love to strengthen, improve and beautify both our own lives and those of our clients. Using the above philosophy achieves this result and gives purpose to our daily work.

-- Julie Cunningham

COLOR ANALYSIS
Here I demonstrate for Rachel how the color swatch (in the photo to the left) drains her and how the color swatch (in the photo to the right) harmonizes with her natural skin tones and eye color.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RySSYQxba6I/AAAAAAAAApQ/x7-iCyh9OHM/s200/wrong.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126383221371268002" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RySSqQxba7I/AAAAAAAAApY/54tPFNbEHSg/s200/right.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126383530608913330" />

MAKE UP
Julie once told me, "If a woman uses the right colors with her make up, she can't put it on wrong. If she uses the wrong colors, she can't put it on right." Have you ever seen a woman follow her lipstick into a room? Unfortunately, this takes place far to often.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RyfkwwxbbOI/AAAAAAAAArk/aPYAQkOxUVM/s320/LuckyOliver-2109501-blog-make-up.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127318227161672930" />

INDIVIDUAL STYLE
In the photo below, Genesis Medical Esthetician, Leah Giesy, is my example of how Individualized Style Analysis translates into understanding each woman's uniqueness and femininity of beauty.

Naturally curved Body Type - drape/wrap looks fantastic.
Bold Autumn - looks beautiful in rich, warm colors.
Romantic Style Personality - looks incredibly sexy in long hair.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RyVKHQxbbFI/AAAAAAAAAqg/2URkO5AsJF8/s400/Leah+One.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126585239453002834" />

WARDROBE DEVELOPMENT SKILLS
Statistics suggest, most women wear about 10% of what's in their closet. Anne's book gives us a unique opportunity to ask the question: "Why do we color our hair?" Going Gray is a "must read" for anyone over 40. Yes, men too. At least Metro Men.

As a hairdresser, I have a unique perspective regarding "coloring hair" based on 27 years of experiential data with clients of all ages. In the early 90's, I became certified in Color Analysis, which opened my eyes and mind to the amazing world of COLOR (and not just haircolor).

COLOR has the power to energize, as well as, drain a person's appearance. What I've witnessed (in some cases) is how dangerous color/image consultants can be if they analyze a person's colors incorrectly. Unfortunately, I see and meet lots of people who look tired, less friendly, older, haggard and pounds heavier solely on the wrong colors he or she is wearing.

Here I demonstrate "The Silver and Gold Test" on my model RACHEL FRANKLIN. Of course Rachel is adorable in both photos but the gold gives her a clearer, creamier complexion. At Rachel's age, haircolor is about having fun! Of course, Rachel still wants to look her best, but I recently colored Rachel's hair in all cool colors and with some make-up adjustments, she looks HOT!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxtjUTFMZzI/AAAAAAAAAk0/zhSMSL1o_nU/s200/rachel+silver.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123798201434662706" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Rxtj0DFMZ0I/AAAAAAAAAk8/sn0pS7V4IGk/s200/rachel+gold.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123798746895509314" />

If you see what I see, PAM BEKO MOLINI of DICKSON REALTY in Reno, Nevada radiates elegant beauty in her silver/gray hair. Like Anne Kreamer, Pam Beko Molini is a "Silver Fox!" If any hairdresser were to color Pam's hair, he or she should have his or her cosmetology license revoked.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxujQjFMZ-I/AAAAAAAAAmY/AFtUN74kAFI/s320/Pam.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123868505754331106" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxtuJDFMZ4I/AAAAAAAAAlc/92rG1q2reIA/s200/100_0268_0217_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123810102789040002" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxtueTFMZ5I/AAAAAAAAAlk/ONsTBArRWPM/s200/100_0269_0218_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123810467861260178" />

Meet ANNE KREAMER author of Going Gray

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxukZjFMZ_I/AAAAAAAAAmg/Bi6yZHo-pY0/s320/akyahoo200.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123869759884781554" />
Here's what Anne has to say about Going Gray:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxumeDFMaAI/AAAAAAAAAmo/ahGrhhYmo70/s320/LuckyOliver-1160489-blog-get_loud.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123872036217448450" />
Q: What made you decide to stop coloring your hair?<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Rxuu_DFMaCI/AAAAAAAAAm4/_2hqsWtL4r8/s400/epiphinlilydale165.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123881399246153762" />

Anne: A friend sent me photographs from a trip we’d recently taken and in one of them I was standing with my sixteen-year old naturally blond daughter and a good friend with gray hair. I was in the middle with a harsh and dark brown hair dye and when I looked at that photograph I realized that I didn’t like the way I looked. I saw that my face and hair no longer really jibed with each other.

Q: How did you decide to go about letting your hair grow in?

Anne: That was the hardest part of the whole process. I was fond of my shoulder length hair and didn’t want to get a buzz cut and start fresh, so I went to my colorist assuming that we could just start to pull the color out. But unfortunately it isn’t simple like that. You have to add different kinds of highlights to blend in with your roots as they grow out as well as a toner that can help to blend in the various colors. And none of it looks very good.

Q: How long did it take?

Anne: From start to finish it took me about 18 months to get rid of all of my color. And it was tough – about mid-point I felt like I looked like an old crazy kind of bag lady. My hair was brittle and sort of unkempt looking and I finally decided to cut about four inches off. It was wonderfully liberating. It felt as if I’d cut off my old and disingenuous dyed past and was ready to look to the future with a clear eye about my age.

Q: What made you decide to write a book about the experience?

Anne: My usual way of making any kind of big change in life is to tell as many people as I can what I’m intending to do, and then I have to follow through. So I suggested that I write a piece for More magazine about the experience. And More got the most letters from their readers about my piece they’d ever had so I thought I’d touched a nerve that was worth analyzing in greater detail.

Q: What were the issues that you’d uncovered while your hair was growing out?

Anne: I discovered that I was worried about whether I could ever be attractive to men in the same way with gray hair as I thought I had been with my dyed brown hair. And when I began to talk with other women about my experience I uncovered that worry about their loss of attractiveness is perhaps the single greatest fear almost all women feel as they get older – and gray hair is just one very visible signal of age. Women were also terrified that they would lose professional opportunity if they were perceived as old.

Q: How did you go about getting at the underlying truth or issues behind those fears?

Anne: I did several different things.

I talked to as many different kinds of men and women as I could – from well-known people like Emmylou Harris, Anna Quindlen, Frances McDormand, Mireille Guiliano (French Women Don’t Get Fat), Nora Ephron and Governor Ann Richards to regular people I met across the country. I conducted a national survey of 500 people probing all sorts of issues around aging and the things that we do to mask the signs of aging. I used myself as a guinea pig in a variety of situations – I pseudo-dated on-line, went out to bars, interviewed headhunters and met in cognito with image consultants. And I read everything I could get my hands on.

Q: What surprised you the most?

Anne: You mean after I figured out that I had spent $65,000 on hair color alone during the 25 years I dyed my hair? (And $300,000 after adjusting for inflation!)

Wow! But yes, beyond that statistic.

What most surprised me was discovering that when it comes to letting their hair be its natural gray, or not, I think a lot of women tend to be worried about the wrong thing. I certainly was. More women are more worried that men won’t find them attractive with gray hair, and yet believe that gray hair is acceptable professionally. In my research, the truth was pretty much the opposite.

Q: What do you mean?

Anne: Well, for instance, I tried to really get at whether gray hair was unattractive to men on Match.com. I figured if I was honest about my age and interests and posted an image of myself with gray hair that I’d naturally get fewer “dates” (or “winks” as overtures are called on Match.com) than I would when I posted the same information but instead used an image of myself with my hair Photo-shopped brown. And shockingly, after I did the experiment three times in three different cities, three times as many men in New York, Chicago and L.A. were interested in going out with me when my hair was gray. This blew my mind. Maybe men figured that if I were being honest about the color of my hair they figured perhaps the lack of pretence would make me more accessible and easier to date. Or maybe the gray made me stand out from the overwhelming majority of Match-com women my age who color their hair.

Q: Did you test this theory in the real world?

Anne: Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. I went out to a variety of New York bars (from places where Wall Street guys would hang out to the kinds where locals went to watch sports) and once again I was really surprised by how it seemed that my gray hair color did nothing to prevent me from meeting and talking with nice-looking younger guys. Most women I talked with during research for my book were convinced that if a woman had gray hair and then got divorced that it was absolutely essential that she dye her hair if she were ever going to date again. I strongly believe that that is not the case. And moreover, I would suggest to most women that if the guy they’re interested in will only like them if they dye their hair, then maybe he’s not Mr. Right.

Q: Was there anything else that supports your contrarian point of view?

Anne: The results from my survey were compelling. There is a huge double standard. Through a Photo shopped experiment I also tested precisely how much gray hair aged a person and what I discovered is that if a person is in their 40s or 50s, gray hair allows others to accurately guess a person’s age. When I Photo shopped the gray hair out with brown, the person was guessed to be about two or three years younger. Which seems like a modest difference to work so hard to achieve.

Q: So what was the story professionally?

Anne: I interviewed two different media headhunters – one in New York, the other based in Colorado and both said that they had neither a female client nor a prospective job candidate with gray hair. They went into real detail about how gray hair was consistently viewed as a signal that a person would not be “right” for most company cultures. And if a woman were in sales or marketing allowing herself to go gray on the job would be the kiss of death.

Q: You didn’t expect this?

Anne: I met with these women assuming they’d tell me that if I wanted to get back into the corporate arena then I’d have to update my image and dye my hair. But I didn’t expect them to be so emphatic about how damaging gray hair could be to a woman’s career.

Q: What about the image consultants?

Anne: I was completely taken aback by the image consultants. I met with three very different people and firms and in each instance they believed that my gray hair could be an asset. The main thing I learned from them was that if you change any one aspect of your look, then it is important to modify everything else to bring out your best features. I needed to update my style and color palette. And it was some of the best money I’ve spent in a long time.

Q: What about men?

Anne: I interviewed a lot of men for the book and with the exception of a writer living in Hollywood, all of the men claimed to be indifferent to the color of a woman’s hair. If a woman is lively and interested in what they are saying and seems to take care in her personal appearance, then hair color was irrelevant to the men – and they are so worried about going bald that the color of our hair never entered the equation!

But I also discovered that men are the next market segment that the cosmetic companies are targeting for hair color. The female market is practically saturated so men are the only growth area left. It’s a scary thought.

Q: And did you find any differences with people from other countries?

Anne: I interviewed Mireille Guiliano, the author of the French Women Don’t Get Fat books, and also several other European men and women and, not surprisingly, found that Europeans in general have a greater tolerance for a wide range of what women can look like as they age.

Q: Where did you end up? Do you disapprove of people who dye their hair?

Anne: I certainly don’t disapprove of people who dye their hair – after all, I’m a very recent convert to my natural color. And I no longer work in a corporate environment so I have the luxury of feeling safe and comfortable writing at home by myself with my gray hair. And I’ve been married to the same man for 26 years. But I did come through on the other side happier and more at home in my body than when I dyed my hair. It feels liberating to walk down the street and know that as much as possible I’m projecting pretty much who I am to the world. I love not spending the time at the beauty shop and I really love not spending the money.

I feel like I’m a better role model for my daughters and it seems like my husband finds me as sexy with my natural hair.

I also discovered through my research and reading that acknowledgement of your real age is one of the most important tools we have to increase the odds that we’ll age healthfully and happily. Several studies have clearly indicated that people who accept their age actually live longer. So I love that by choosing to give up one little piece of artifice I might actually be helping myself stick around longer for the grandchildren I long to know.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Rxuq-DFMaBI/AAAAAAAAAmw/s_K8AJ1T4EY/s400/threeshot125.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123876984019773458" />
END

Several years ago, I was in a restaurant observing a beautiful woman with silver/gray hair - I had to ask her age - she informed me she was twenty-eight. The men in the room couldn't take their eyes off of her. She was gorgeous! This Silver Angel knew her gray hair worked for her. Did it make her look older? Not in my mind. In fact, if her hair had have been colored, she probably wouldn't have turned as many heads. It wasn't only her gray haircolor, however, that made my dining experience so memorable. Her hairstyle complimented her face shape and body type. Her make-up and clothes style were impeccable. Either this young woman was innately sensitive to what worked (in her favor) or she had a competent image consultant assist her in making all the right decisions. She was living, breathing ART.

Just like anything else, there are good and not so good image consultants. If you decide to visit an image consultant, make sure you do your homework. Find someone who knows her/his stuff. NOTE: Full spectrum lighting is imperative when having your colors analyzed. Color is dramatically affected by different types of lighting. The old days of doing Color Analysis in someone's living room are over.

So do you want to Go Gray? Are you locked into haircolor that is not all it could be?

Anne informed me during a phone conversation she has received e-mails from women (and men) around the world trying to, more gracefully, grow out their haircolor. "Do you have any tips on how to do this?" Anne asked me.

Here is my suggestion:

Each time your stylist touches up the roots, choose one (to one-half shade) lighter than the previous color application. Also, decrease the volume of developer to 10 volume or less. This creates a stain and the gray hair will begin to appear "dimensional." Stop pulling color through the ends. Begin using a cool blonde shampoo and conditioner to minimize the warm tones, which will inevitably begin to appear from not pulling the haircolor through the ends. At some point, highlighting may be an option. In most cases, highlights are less obtrusive than a solid color during the grow-out period.

There will come the time when you will have to take the plunge. How about a short haircut to get rid of all the remaining color? Contrary to what most women think, shorter hair works better during the fall/winter months. During cooler weather, turtle neck sweaters, neck scarves, coats and higher-collar blouses soften the look of shorter hair. During hot weather, more skin is exposed by tank tops, etc. Short hair in fall/winter, longer hair in spring/summer. It makes sense once you consider your wardrobe and accessory options.

I am grateful for Anne Kreamer's book and message. I think Anne has done an incredible job sharing her story of what she learned about "beauty, sex, work, motherhood, authenticity and everything else that really matters" in her book, Going Gray.

My special thanks to Anne Kreamer and Bonnie Hannah (Anne's Publicist) for their kindness and willingness to take time out from their busy schedules to make this segment possible.

To visit Anne on-line, go to: www.annekreamer.com

Dorlon Peckham
Genesis Salon
250 Crummer Lane
Reno, NV 89502
775-828-9797
www.genesissalon.com

HALLOWEEN TRICKS AND TREATS

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxKx2DFMZTI/AAAAAAAAAgg/qS_p1Yvy2ho/s320/LuckyOliver-747745-blog-skeleton.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121351268371817778" />Oftentimes, the simplest Halloween costume can be the most effective. To assist you in regard to designing your most original Halloween Costume this year, lets first consider our five basic Style Personalities.

Try to identify your Style Personality among the following:

1. The Natural – simple, practical and comfortable
2. The Classic – traditional and/or recognizable
3. The Dramatic – likes to turn heads, unconventional, out-of-the-box
4. The Artistic – a milder combination of Classic and Dramatic
5. The Romantic – loves her long hair, sexy, sometimes revealing

You will most likely have one dominant, as well as, a secondary Style Personality. To help get your creative juices flowing, I've provided some images with comments tying in her/his Style Personality with her/his costume design.

For example, this Romantic loves her long hair but also enjoys a Dramatic flair. Here is a revealing display of a Romantic and Dramatic Devil woman’s Halloween costume. Natasha will definitely turn heads when she walks into a room, however, I would suggest she bring a coat along just in case it gets chilly.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxKzjjFMZWI/AAAAAAAAAg4/shV-WB6F3JM/s400/LuckyOliver-4482722-blog-red_devil_dancer_girl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121353149567493474" />
Tiffany has the Natural Style Personality and may wear something as simple as cosmetic contact lenses, which can be obtained from most optometrists. These contact lenses can be quite Dramatic as well.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxK0djFMZXI/AAAAAAAAAhA/s68AarRkgGs/s400/LuckyOliver-3688896-blog-screaming_scary_woman.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121354145999906162" />
Here is a Classic, yet thirsty Transylvanian Vampire with his Natural female victim. Great for couples.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxK1JjFMZYI/AAAAAAAAAhI/Rro5re90kyY/s400/LuckyOliver-386095-blog-transilvania.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121354901914150274" />
The Artistic is a milder combination of the Classic and the Dramatic. Our beautiful model Kathy provides a great example of this possibility. She is wearing naturally colored contact lenses for a subtle, yet Dramatic effect.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxK1sTFMZZI/AAAAAAAAAhQ/HOr8ZFOqMbE/s400/LuckyOliver-4149905-blog-gorgeous_halloween_girl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121355498914604434" />

Hair Tricks: This trick is achieved by using a vacuum cleaner (hose) to pull the hair in an upward direction followed slowly and closely (spraying the hair) with Bumble and bumble Extra Strength Hairspray. (Going slow allows the hairspray to dry to hold the spike in position - allow hair to dry completely before too much movement - egg whites are then applied to the hair to create a concrete strength concoction). Bumble also provides colored, aerosol Hair Powders to add temporary color to the design. Hair Powders come in five colors - Red, Black, White, Blondish and Brown and can be purchased at Genesis.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxK30zFMZaI/AAAAAAAAAhY/dLuSKRz5gh8/s200/816717104_l.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121357843966748066" /> <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxK4DDFMZbI/AAAAAAAAAhg/iGGA1NJZAuA/s200/L_bbi_product07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121358088779883954" />

Make-Up Treats: This simple Marilyn Manson application can be done with liquid eye liner. Darkening the lip color adds drama. A similar type dog collar can be purchased at most pet stores.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxK5jzFMZcI/AAAAAAAAAho/G4o3QnVAAAU/s400/LuckyOliver-1295120-blog-wickedness.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121359750932227522" />

Our next two models take make-up and art to higher levels -- Body Paints add unlimited possibilities.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxLCfzFMZeI/AAAAAAAAAh0/d7ZYk9c9n-I/s400/LuckyOliver-1660189-blog-female_eye.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121369577817400802" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxLC2zFMZfI/AAAAAAAAAh8/NlrIA0xFXLU/s400/LuckyOliver-1870617-blog-female_trol.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121369972954392050" />
Another way to approach costume design is to consider your body parts individually. This can help keep things simple and original.

Aimee created her Dramatic hands by attaching artificial claws to thick, rubber gloves.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxTVbTFMZsI/AAAAAAAAAj8/1SecsmWk6Ag/s400/LuckyOliver-3752784-blog-scary_woman.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121953341182338754" />
Lip accessories are oftentimes overlooked. For the Romantic, this might add the finishing touch to a Victorian type costume.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxLH9jFMZhI/AAAAAAAAAiM/57HvneyND9k/s400/LuckyOliver-1969494-blog-ruby_red_lips.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121375586476647954" />

FYI: Please use caution if designing this type of look for Halloween. These days, we can't be sure if it's really a costume or if Shelby escaped from the psyche ward of a local hospital? If she consumes a little too much of the grape, her date may be with the men in white coats.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxOQjTFMZjI/AAAAAAAAAi0/t83YTA5sXDE/s400/LuckyOliver-4555431-blog-psycho_girl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121596137342264882" />

HERE ARE SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN:

Ancient Origins of Halloween: <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxTCtjFMZkI/AAAAAAAAAi8/0jtymlbPGDI/s200/LuckyOliver-382514-blog-death_with_a_sword.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121932763994023490" />

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxTDIDFMZlI/AAAAAAAAAjE/3KlobmFIKZU/s200/LuckyOliver-209509-blog-halloween_skull.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121933219260556882" />Modern Traditions of Halloween:

The American tradition of "trick-or-treating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives.

The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as "going a-souling" was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money.

The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

Evolution Of A Halloween Holiday:<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxTIfzFMZrI/AAAAAAAAAj0/hrebXrdK8Mg/s200/LuckyOliver-4311901-blog-scarry_woman_witch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121939124840588978" />

As European immigrants came to America, they brought their varied Halloween customs with them. Because of the rigid Protestant belief systems that characterized early New England, celebration of Halloween in colonial times was extremely limited there.
It was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. As the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups, as well as the American Indians, meshed, a distinctly American version of Halloween began to emerge. The first celebrations included "play parties," public events held to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other's fortunes, dance, and sing. Colonial Halloween festivities also featured the telling of ghost stories and mischief-making of all kinds. By the middle of the nineteenth century, annual autumn festivities were common, but Halloween was not yet celebrated everywhere in the country.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, America was flooded with new immigrants. These new immigrants, especially the millions of Irish fleeing Ireland's potato famine of 1846, helped to popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally. Taking from Irish and English traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today's "trick-or-treat" tradition. Young women believed that, on Halloween, they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn, apple parings, or mirrors.
In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers, than about ghosts, pranks, and witchcraft.
At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. Parties focused on games, foods of the season, and festive costumes. Parents were encouraged by newspapers and community leaders to take anything "frightening" or "grotesque" out of Halloween celebrations. Because of their efforts, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious overtones by the beginning of the twentieth century.
By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular, but community-centered holiday, with parades and town-wide parties as the featured entertainment. Despite the best efforts of many schools and communities, vandalism began to plague Halloween celebrations in many communities during this time. By the 1950s, town leaders had successfully limited vandalism and Halloween had evolved into a holiday directed mainly at the young. Due to the high numbers of young children during the fifties baby boom, parties moved from town civic centers into the classroom or home, where they could be more easily accommodated. Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived. Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats. A new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow. Today, Americans spend an estimated $6.9 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country's second largest commercial holiday.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RxTHczFMZpI/AAAAAAAAAjk/CaXrsXhLYZ0/s400/LuckyOliver-390493-blog-trick_or_treat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121937973789353618" />
Please make it a fun and safe Halloween.

I now have an Apprentice, Tiffiny McCorkle, who I've personally trained. Since the early 1980's, I've been asked to perform countless "MAKEOVER MIRACLES."

As a hairdresser, I bear the responsibility of providing each client with an individualized hairstyle to compliment her natural colorations, hair type, style personality, skin texture, face shape, body type, lifestyle and the current trends to keep her up-to-date. In many cases, it becomes a work in progress. Nevertheless, it's what I do and what I've committed myself to do. I get it!

I've come to realize there are several levels to a makeover. The first, most basic level is the physical aspect of the hairstyle itself. Does it work for her? The second level is, can she maintain her "new do" after she leaves the salon? This requires education in regard to using the correct home haircare products and how to use the tools such as flat irons, curling irons, brushes, rollers, etc. Also, to inform her on the potential, damaging effects of certain brushes and heat implements.

What about getting different styling options from her "one" hairstyle? This too, requires education and encouragement. Helping someone "step out of her comfort zone," is where the slope can get slippery. Change someones perception of who she is and/or who she can become? This subject is always up for debate. Is it a hairstylist's place? Each woman must decide for herself.

My training and exposure to companies like Bumble and bumble has opened my eyes, ears and artistic perceptions to what is possible. Below is a recent Bumble and bumble poster which I have next to my styling station to encourage clients as well as myself to explore the many possibilities.

One Woman - Ten Months - Four Haircuts - Eight Styles

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RwkeJjFMY8I/AAAAAAAAAdM/8UYGXOSsUOI/s400/IMGP0017_2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118655600867959746" />

Most women are open for change - this is why the majority of my clientele are women. I once attended the 50-year wedding anniversary of a client's mother and father. At the celebration a table was set up showing the couple's wedding day picture with several dozen photos taken throughout their 50 years. The wife progressed through the five decades sporting every imaginable style representing the decades she was living. The husband? Basically the same as the day they were married. The hair becoming thinner and the waistline becoming thicker but basically his hairstyle was the same as the day he said, "I do."

We love watching makeover shows on television or seeing pictures in magazines and books that show "the before and after" pictures that "wow" us. In many cases, there are subtle shifts in the photo itself where the subject is frowning in "the before" picture and in "the after" picture she's smiling. Bad lighting, then good lighting, is another trick used by clever photographers to enhance the magic of the makeover transformation.

This week I am spotlighting a client who has redefined, in my mind, the "MAKEOVER MIRACLE." All I can say is "WOW!" I feel honored to have played a small part in helping her look and feel her best. The day I cut Janet's hair shorter, she sat white knuckled in my chair, looking into the mirror with disbelief. Janet Pratt, however, made a decision to investigate the possibilities of "THE MAKEOVER MIRACLE."

In Janet's own words:

"I knew I had to do something when I ended up on the bathroom floor and couldn't get up. [She had toppled over from her own weight] I started with a few changes in diet and began some easy exercise. After losing 65 pounds I looked and felt a lot better and plateaued for a year. After a year started working and gained back about 20 pounds. I really wanted to get the rest off. I really wanted to weigh under 200 pounds. I started a regimented diet and lost about 20 pounds. People started to tell me how great I looked and that there was a hot person inside me. Men started paying attention to me. That felt very good after years of being invisible. I began to feel more confident. I cut my hair short and colored it red which was a very big thing for me. I got a lot of encouragement from the people around me which encouraged me to continue toward my goal. When I realized that I had lost a total of about 80 pounds I realized that maybe I could really get all the weight off this time. Going under 200 pounds was a huge milestone. I was able to buy clothes more to my taste instead of whatever was available in my size. The more I was able to express myself by what I chose to wear and style my hair, the more positive feedback I received. The first time someone told me I was sexy I was thrilled to pieces. I had never seen myself that way and to have someone tell me that at the age of 45 was wonderful. All of this keeps me motivated to keep going toward my goal. When I was 275 pounds I felt like people either didn’t see me or didn’t like me. I hated crowds and social situations. My sister said it was because I put off an unapproachable vibe, like I expected them not to like me. Now I’m more outgoing and friendly (OK, I’m flirty!). I’m comfortable meeting new people and people often tell me that I’m fun to be around. At 275 pounds there were a lot of things that I wanted to do. At 175, I’m doing them. I’m somewhat athletic, I bicycle, ice skate, play softball, and weight train. I never thought I could dance, but now I ballroom dance and people often stop me and tell me what a wonderful dancer I am and that they enjoy watching me. I would never have danced publicly before to begin with, and most certainly not on an empty dance floor where people could watch me. My life has changed completely and I’m a different person."

THE MAKEOVER
BEFORE

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RwuNIjFMY9I/AAAAAAAAAdU/MTLwwVR1HtQ/s320/Janet+One.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119340579432195026" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RwuNhjFMY-I/AAAAAAAAAdc/PhjT_zBsy4o/s320/Janet+Two.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119341008928924642" />AFTER

Janet's story brings warmth to my heart. I hope you will find the inspiration in her strength and persistence as much as I do. Knowing the other aspects of Janet's life and what she contributes to the betterment and protection of children, makes her one of the most beautiful people I've ever met.

Congratulations and a "BIG WOW!" from all the lives you've touched and continue to touch in such selfless, positive ways. Cloe' needs her haircut and would love to have her highlights brightened.

Her predicament?

Because of school, Cloe' finds herself on a strict financial diet.

Back home, when mom and dad were footin' the bills for Cloe', she paid "Big Bucks" for a hairstyle that complimented her face shape, lifestyle and busy schedule.

Cloe', new to the area because of school and "Big Bucks" being on her most-endangered species list, she asked around the college campus to get a recommendation for an affordable salon. During her research, a Proctology Major suggested she try "Cuts R Us Hair and Nail Hut."

Cloe' dials the number with anxious anticipation hoping to find someone who will take good care of her like her stylist back home. "How many rings before someone answers the phone?" her mind quietly ponders.

Suddenly, the ringing is interrupted by a harried-voice blurting out, "Cuts R Us, gotta put you on hold!" And then the dreaded on-hold CLICK, only to be replaced by endless minutes of maddening, irritating music blasting through her cell phone.

Cloe', being the optimist she is, looks on the bright side of life and continues to hold. For a brief moment her mind sinks into despair, "Did I dial the right number?"

Finally, the roar of distorted music is replaced by an impatient voice asking, "Who are you waiting for?"

"My name is Cloe' and I'd like to make an appointment for a..."

"Joey, who cuts your hair here at Cuts R Us?"

"My name is Cloe', not Joey, and I've never been to your salon. I was hoping you could recommend someone good."

"Hold on," the less than friendly voice demands.

Again, through the earpiece of Cloe's cell phone, the shouting intensifies, "Hey Jacko, there's some lady on the phone who wants a haircut. You got any time?"

Some mumbling, phone-fumbling and then, "Be here at three. Dorlon is Tiff's Mentor. If you listened Thursday morning to our "Health and Beauty" segment on The Bill and Connie Show, you would have heard Tiffiny and I discussing the benefits of the Genesis Salon Apprenticeship Program. Tiffiny explained how she's learned to use Color Analysis to identify which hair color will look best with a person's skin tone and eye color. How she analyses the client's Face Shape to suggest which haircut will be most flattering. How identifying Body Type can assist in choosing the most appropriate hair length. And how a person's Style Personality helps her choose the best approach to home haircare products, styling and/or blow drying.

Lifestyle and Current Trends come into play only after she fully understands the client's wants, needs and desires. In other words, what will assist the client in looking and feeling her or his best!

On Saturday, Chris Merbach, owner of Rollin' In The Dough Bakery, had a lesson on how to use his Bumble and bumble styling products at home. Okay, things may have gotten a little out of control between Tiffiny and me. You can be assured, however, Chris loves all the attention he receives from our beautiful staff at Genesis. The delicious cakes, muffins, pastries and other treats he brings the girls from his bakery have made him a SUPER HERO at Genesis!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RwF9uzFMYuI/AAAAAAAAAbk/DiFBPbzR_EE/s400/IMGP0012.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116508894609040098" />
Currently, I work one-on-one with three Apprentices at Genesis - Julie Vargus, Tiffiny McCorkle and Melizza Santos.

If Cloe' would have tuned into our Thursday Morning "Health and Beauty" segment on ALICE 96.5, she would have learned THE APPRENTICE is what she was so desperately searching for - discounted prices, red carpet service, professionalism and extraordinary work!

Early in my career, I was THE APPRENTICE to a man by the name of Russell Hyde. But what happens when we're out in public and we see an authentic ”Joe Dirt" admiring his reflection in storefront window? Our minds may question, "Is it already Halloween?" or, "Is this guy for real?" And then the harsh reality hits us! "This guy is serious!" "Oh mercy," we say under our breath and quickly scurry away in the opposite direction.

Life experience has taught me there are certain questions, which simply cannot be answered.

For example, questions like, "What happened five minutes before 'The Big Bang?'" or, "Why can we remember the past but not the future?" or, "If Elvis is still alive, why does he only do interviews with The Enquirer and not Newsweek?" These are things we have to accept in order not to drive ourselves insane. But, what I struggle with is trying to understand how certain hairstyles become popular, mutate and then last so long in the marketplace? Could it be the food additives are affecting our better judgment? Have we altered our genetic code by consuming too many drugs during the 1960's? Is it because we are no longer part of the food chain?

Last week at Starbucks as I patiently waited for The Barista to construct my coffee drink, a customer walks in with the scariest haircut I had ever seen. I asked myself, Did she cut it herself? Can she not afford to have it done professionally? Did she use a meat cleaver? ...a Flowbee?

NOTE: For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Flowbee, here's grandma demonstrating how easy it is for her to do her own hair. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvWxBTFMYUI/AAAAAAAAAX4/y5g9KoUvT9w/s400/hbfb-6Flowbee_Haircutting_System_250x250.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113187587809108290" /> The Flowbee is a device that works similar to a vacuum cleaner. It "sucks up" the hair into a tube and then cuts it.

For more information on how you can own a Flowbee, tune in to the "Shopping Channel" at around 4:00 a.m. Chances are you will be more courageous to order one if you've been drinking heavily.

Back at Starbucks I struggled to understand... Maybe this woman likes her "jacked up" hair? Maybe she's given up on life? Maybe she's blind? (No seeing eye dog so that couldn't be it). Maybe she doesn't know any better? I wondered how much this woman spends each month on Lattes and if she could invest her money more thoughtfully by getting a decent haircut.

But what about all of the celebrities (those rich folks) who can afford Starbucks and still choose to wear "scary hair?"

Maybe some get their fashion inspiration from Moe, Curly and Larry?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvUz1DFMYEI/AAAAAAAAAVI/QzIqXcYjfcw/s400/Stooges3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113049938402238530" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvU3szFMYHI/AAAAAAAAAVg/ZCSWvqGT9CI/s200/Brittany-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113054194714828914" />"Hey Kevin, look at me! I'm over here."<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvU4BzFMYII/AAAAAAAAAVo/GBi66zadFKM/s200/kevin-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113054555492081794" />In the photos above, we see our most current and talked about fashion icons proving my "Three Stooges Theory" possibility. Could it be "famous people" wear their hair badly simply for the attention? In Britney's case, I'm not sure what to think. I do know that during Britney's self-indulgent haircutting session, there was a point where Brit did look a lot like "Stooge Larry."

Donald Trump, Don King and Phil Spector are tied for "The Golden Crown" when it comes to "bad hair." The sad thing is, they think they look distinguished and irresistible in their coiffured mops. Can the "ego" distort reality to this degree? I'd like to think they're simply having fun at everyone else's expense.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvU7rjFMYKI/AAAAAAAAAV4/txAKYHgV5VU/s200/Donald+T.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113058571286503586" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvU75DFMYLI/AAAAAAAAAWA/Tr5HgVxR80o/s200/don-king.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113058803214737586" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvU87DFMYNI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/WAGLamUyONI/s200/Phil-1.jpg" border="0"alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113059937086103762" />
In doing further research for this post, I consulted a geneticist who hypothesized "the bad hair gene" may be passed on by our parents. He provided me with a photo (seen below) of a young family which supports his claim. Was the geneticist on to something? "Notice the young daughter's hairstyle," the doctor proclaimed! "It's similar to her mom and dad's."
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvVEMzFMYPI/AAAAAAAAAWg/L4ypYVkM-ew/s400/mullet-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113067938610176242" />"Is there anything we can do", I asked the doctor, "to reverse the cycle of these genetic mishaps?"

The doc's response?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvVNDjFMYQI/AAAAAAAAAWo/ga_lsyvRXCs/s320/bowl+cuts-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113077675301036290" />
"If you can't beat um, join um!"

-- Dr. Chi Tea

Dorlon Peckham - Hairdesigner<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RvVnmjFMYSI/AAAAAAAAAXo/LPEUN-OHy_w/s200/D+-+Mullet.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113106863898779938" />
Genesis Salon & Medical Spa
250 Crummer Lane
Reno, NV 89502
775-828-9797
www.genesissalon.com

Here I am sportin' my Pompadour Mullet back in 1987 - Joe Dirt's got nothin' on me!

d FINDING fall 4 U

SPICING UP THE BOB FOR FALL 2007<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Ru21_Z4rcwI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/hv_WTh4eji8/s400/POSH-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110941253020381954" />
With the changing season, comes a change in weather and finally we are ready for change. So what are you going to do for fall? Hair? Fashion? Fun?

I am often asked by clients in the salon, what are the trends for fall? My response is always the same... It depends on which fashion magazine you are reading. Everyone has their opinion. And while there are certain aspects of TRENDS that influence most of us, each individual woman must be kept individualized based on HER.

So what then makes a fall hairstyle? How it looks with your fall fashion. Think about it. If you have been wearing long layers for summer, will that work as well for you in the fall? Not really. What happens is when the temperature starts dropping and coats, sweaters, scarves and higher collars are added to the mix, the longer layers no longer work as well, or look as good, as they did during hot summer months. The length start looking unkempt, the lighter colors you were loving for summer, start looking dry and damaged. It's time for your fall make over!

While current TRENDS are great, the order of considerations that should be discussed "for your individualized benefit" before TRENDS are:

Color Analysis - do you look better in warm, cool or neutral colors regarding your hair and make up? Is your skin more textured or is it more clear... or is it a combination of texture and clear? Do you look better in lighter, darker or medium colored hair?

Face Shape - long? round? heart? square? diamond? oval?

Style Personality - I do nothing with my hair to style it. This is a NATURAL style personality. I like my hair to be neat and kept. This is more CLASSIC. I like my hair to be unique, but not too crazy. This is more ARTISTIC. I like everyone to notice my hair rocks. This is more DRAMATIC. I love my long hair and I would die if it was ever cut short. This is called the ROMANTIC style personality. Most women are a combination of two to three STYLE PERSONALITIES based on work, play and/or pleasure.

Body Type - wider shoulders, narrower hips / same width of shoulders as hips / narrow shoulders, wider hips / hour glass figure.

Lifestyle - active, moderate, low activity.

Finally we come to TRENDS. A TREND is nothing more than someone else's opinion regarding how he or she interprets the world. Then, you ask yourself, does this work for me? Your stylist should be keeping you up-to-date with what works and what doesn't based on current fashion. The 80's are over. If your stylist is keeping you locked into decades gone by, move on. There are plenty of fantastic stylists. It's your stylist's responsibility to keep you "looking hot!" If your look is dated, set your stylist free! In other words, find someone else!

Fashion and hairstyle TRENDS are recycled or better described as reinvented or up-dated from past fashion icons. The most popular and practical hairstyle for fall and winter is THE BOB. The BOB can be individualized for each and ever style personality, except the ROMANTIC. Remember, the ROMANTIC could never leave the house with shorter hair.

Louise Brooks, the 1920's Silent Film Star was given the title of "Queen of The BOB." With excitement, exhilaration, anticipation and endless enthusiasm, I said, "When can I start!?"

I love what I do so much, no matter what other career possibilities ever come along, I will continue to provide each and every client the best I have to offer in regard to helping her look and feel her best. I have found my purpose in life. What I do as a hairdresser gives my life meaning. I have stumbled onto "my path to happiness" and every woman who asks for my assistance, I will provide it to the best of my ability. How did I get so lucky? I have no idea. I simply lucked out!

THE JOHNSON O'CONNOR RESEARCH FOUNDATION is dear to my heart because what JOCRF can provide for you (and/or your daughters and sons) is what I so luckily stumbled on to - a fulfilling career direction, doing what you love to do and what you're good at doing -- this is ultimate happiness.

Identifying natural gifts, talents, abilities and aptitudes can assist a person in her decision making for college, school or life direction. The results, when correctly applied and nurtured, can provide a path to happiness through self-discovery and self-expression. The old cliche "If you love what you do you never have to work another day in your life," rings true.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Ruc0aOqyJ-I/AAAAAAAAAOM/YmT_TtnQ3SI/s320/Blog+-+Goddess+in+the+Shadows.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109109927493904354" />To the left is one of my favorite photos of a Hindu Temple Carving at Khajuraho, India titled, GODDESS IN THE SHADOWS.

To me, it represents someone living in the shadow of her potential.

It is my hope that your "sacred feminine nature" be exposed to the world in all its beauty and glory through the life you lead and the work you do. For me, helping others improve the quality of their lives is extremely rewarding and it's why I love what I do! Designing programs in a private and personal setting makes it even better. It allows me to really focus on the specifics of my client's needs.

For many, a Private Personal Training Studio is more appealing than a larger gym. Here are a few comments others have shared with me:

1. Non-intimidating, comfortable and professional atmosphere.
2. Extremely personalized based on my goals and exercise level.
3. Convenient and flexible times.
4. Certified and experienced trainers whose passion is to improve physical, mental and emotional states.
5. No pressure to by the latest supplements...

In addition, working out with a personal trainer provides faster results, exercise variety, more motivation to succeed, safer workouts due to proper form and it's a time saver.

Here, I am demonstrating a tricep extension for my client so she can observe how to properly and safely do the exercise. As she tries it, I can then coach her so she involves the correct muscle groups for maximum benefit. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Rt-PueqyJ6I/AAAAAAAAANs/d4vUKKgyVfY/s320/Stacy+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106958531130697634" />
If you've never experienced a private personal training studio, please feel free to contact me. I would love to share with more information and the positive, life-changing benefits I can provide for you as your personal trainer.

Below I've listed several ways to contact me.

Thanks for listening!

Stacy Tibbals
775-240-1666
get_fit_now@sbcglobal.net
www.renosportnspine.com/otherservices.html

Book Review: Beauty Fades, Dumb Is Forever - The Making of a Happy Woman by Judy Sheindlin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RtbNBOqyJ3I/AAAAAAAAANU/ivRK4lvPpbQ/s320/Judge+Judy+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104492648672143218" />Most of us know Judy Sheinldlin as Judge Judy.

During the Paris Hilton debacle, Judy Sheindlin was a guest on Larry King and discussed some of the content of her best selling book, Beauty Fades, Dumb Is Forever - The Making of a Happy Woman.

I was so impressed by Judge Judy's message to women of all ages, the next day I went to our local bookstore to buy her book. I was floored when none of them had it in stock. I asked if it was because "the book" was such a hot seller it was flying off the shelves! Every book seller said the same thing - "We don't carry this book, but we can order it for you." "You have got to be kidding me!" I exclaimed in dismay.

Then I considered, because it's an older book (copyright 1999) people have already read it. Upon further investigation, I found the majority I spoke with had never heard of the book.

I ordered Judy's book from Amazon and within a couple of days I was engaged in its candor, superb writing style, wit and message.

If you are a woman of any age, I highly recommend reading it.

If you are a man and want to better understand the challenges women face, I suggest reading this book in its entirety. As a father, I needed to read it. As a husband, I needed to read it. As an employer, I needed to read it. As a person, I needed to read it.

I agree with almost everything Judy describes. Yes, "Dumb Is Forever" if a person doesn't take responsibility for his or her own education and life. "Beauty Fades" is where I had a problem. I DO KNOW what Judy means by "Beauty Fades" in the title. But what this does is reinforces the disturbing notion that only the younger women are beautiful. Her meaning of "Beauty Fades" is for young women such as Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears, Linsey Lohan and on and on. If these so called "Beautiful Young Women" fail to get it together, as they age, they will have very little if anything to contribute to society, friends, family and others. Right now they are young and beautiful. Later, when "Beauty Fades," there won't be anything left for these current icons to display. Their stories will most likely end with a tragic chapter.

Personally, I think her book would have made a bigger impact on the general public, especially women, if the title was simply, "The Making of a Happy Woman."

With this in mind, I can confidently say, Judge Judy has written one of the most important books in modern history.

One of the most successful and current bestselling books is "The Secret." I love reading, The Secret. It feels good. Its main message is, "The Law of Attraction." In other words, "We reap what we sow." I must tell you, however, "The Secret" is soft reading material compared to the reality of timeless principles contained in Judge Judy's book. We learn, Happiness is a choice. Happiness takes work. Happiness is being responsible for our own happiness. Happiness takes self-discipline. And believe it or not, Happiness is about taking risks. It's much easier to blame circumstances or others for our unhappiness than make the decision work at learning and living the principles of happiness. I'm guilty of it too!

At some point, reality hits all of us. It's no secret. For our current debacle icons, reality is hitting hard. They are attracting exactly what and/or who they are and what and/or who they surround themselves. "The Secret" is correct. It's the law of attraction. The sad reality? These icons don't know how to get out of the mess they are currently in. It's hard to believe, but nevertheless, it's true.

The good news is, EVERYTHING WE NEED IS WITHIN REACH. Will someone please inform Ms. Hilton and Brittany of this.

Just in case they can't read, it comes on audio book as well.

You will most likely have to order this book on-line.

Dorlon Peckham
Genesis Salon
250 Crummer Lane
Reno, NV 89502
775-828-9797

Why Bumble and bumble?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RsbvN-qyJoI/AAAAAAAAALc/qsPtT1R3lrU/s400/L_bbi_product02-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100026651483448962" />"Bumble and bumble products are about choice and attitude. Select products and wear them as your mood shifts from day to day, outfit to outfit, event to event, or season to season.

Rather than feeling that you have to pile wax on top of creme on top of spray, as editorial stylists do out of necessity, get to know each product individually first. Though you’ll naturally gravitate to several favorites, be adventurous.

Some people go for gritty, matte textures and choose Surf Spray or Sumotech. Others prefer more polished finishes and reach for Brilliantine, Sumowax or Shine. Minimalists and naturalists swear by Leave In Conditioner, Prep or Tonic, or a hint of Grooming Creme. Leading ladies make it big with Thickening Spray, Does It All or Classic Hairspray. The naturally curly spring for Curl Conscious products.

Whatever you do, seek stylists’ advice (if you haven’t already). Besides recommending the right shampoo and conditioner, they cut hair with products in mind, use them while cutting, and can teach you when and how to use them. A versatile cut can be worn several ways and products are key to changing it.

Regardless of your preference, we’re sure you’ll find something to love and, like hairdressers worldwide, come to depend on. Welcome to the Bb. family."

Dorlon's Recommendations:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RshWLuqyJxI/AAAAAAAAAMk/-hdZPZLrSnU/s400/(146).jpg" border="0" e fralt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100421337503115026" />What is a great haircut? A beginning... and only a beginning. It's what someone is able to do with a great haircut that makes it fun, sexy, practical or outrageous! This is where Bumble and bumble comes in - using the right products, with a great haircut, and "working it" with the right product(s) based on your wants, needs, desires and mood.

You should be able to achieve at least three different looks from one haircut. Oftentimes a client won't know how to change her hair style because her stylist never taught her how. Why is this? I have a theory. Stylists feel like they're "selling." In truth, no one buys anything she doesn't want - a stylist makes the assumption a client can't afford it, or is simply too busy talking about him or herself. In my opinion, these are some of the greatest injustices (to a client) in the salon business.

Beautiful hair starts with the right shampoo and conditioner.

Find a statement below that best describes your hair. My recommendations follow.

NOTE: Chemically Treated means: (color, highlights, bleach, perms or chemically straightened hair)

1. My hair is chemically treated. Use Gentle Shampoo, Super Rich Conditioner (and Deeep once a week).

2. My hair is fine and/or thin and chemically treated. Use Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner.

3. My hair is "trashed" from over processing - too much of everything. Use Damage Therapy regimen: 1, 2, 3 and 4.

4. My hair is dry and frizzy. Use Alojoba Shampoo and Conditioner.

5. My hair is fine, but dry and frizzy? Use Creme de Coco Shampoo and Conditioner.

6. My hair is too curly, dry and frizzy. Use Curl Conscious Shampoo, Conditioner and Curl Cream/Medium to Thick

7. My hair has curl, but the curl is weak and I'd like more curl. Use Curl Conscious Shampoo, Conditioner and Curl Cream/Fine to Medium

8. My hair is long, dry and frizzy. Use Dehydration Therapy regimen: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

9. My hair is fine and thinning. Use Density Therapy regimen: 1, 2 and 3.

10. My scalp gets irritated and/or flakes. Use Scalp Rebalancing Therapy regimen: 1, 2 and 3.

11. My hair is in good condition and/or I just want to alternate my shampoo and conditioner. Use Seaweed Shampoo and Conditioner.

12. I want to buy my husband, boyfriend and/or "boy toy" a shampoo and conditioner. Buy him Tonic Shampoo and Tonic Lotion. Guys love it. It's simple, smells great and feels good on the scalp.

13. I want deep cleaning once-in-a-while. Use Sunday Shampoo - just once-a-week. If your haircolor is volatile, use Seaweed Shampoo and Conditioner once-a-week instead.

14. I want a super-light conditioner. Use Leave-In (Rinse Out) Conditioner. Or simply use Prep or Tonic Lotion after shampooing.

15. My color fades. Use one of the five Color Support Shampoos and Conditioners. You must use the Shampoo and Conditioner together. The Color Support Shampoo prepares the hair for the Color Support Conditioner.
They come in:
Cool Blonde - fights brassy, gold tones - keeps platinum blondes platinum.
Golden Blonde - keeps golden tones vibrant in blonde hair.
True Red - keeps red hair red.
Cool Brunette - cuts red tones on brunettes.
Warm Brunette - keeps rich browns rich.

So your hair is now clean and conditioned properly. What's next?

Prep or Tonic Lotion. These are two sophisticated products that make a big difference. Water has a pH of 7. Hair has a pH of 4.5. Prep and/or Tonic Lotion helps normalize the pH of your hair by returning its pH to its natural acidic state. This closes the cuticle (outer-most part of the hair). Also, Prep or Tonic Lotion feeds the hair with vitamins - Tonic Lotion contains Tea Tree Oil - Prep does not. Tonic Lotion gives the hair more slip - Prep gives the hair more grip. If you like smoother hair, use Tonic Lotion. If you're going for more volume and texture, use Prep.

Americans generally shampoo and condition everyday. Sometimes twice a day. Instead of so much shampooing and conditioning, try reinventing your style the next day with just Prep or Tonic Lotion. Sometimes second or third day hair looks better. Experiment to find what works best for you.

Now to create a base to work from - Bumble calls it "Shape and Structure."

Styling Lotion - light hold, soothing to the hair, soft and natural.

Thickening Spray - medium hold, great with heat tools like curiing irons, straightening irons, brushes and rollers.

Styling Cream - for maximum support - great on hair that lacks body.

What about the next level of Bumble Styling?

Oils - if your hair is dry and lacks moisture, use one of the following:

Brilliantine
Grooming Cream
Styling Balm

Silicones - if you're looking for smooth, shiny hair, use one of the following:

Defrizz
Straight
Shine
Finishing Balm

NOTE: I find Silicones work better after the hair has been blow-dried. The purpose of silicones is to create a barrier between your hair and the elements, like humidity. If you straighten your hair for example, and it reverts back to fizzy or curl, silicone will stop this.

Waxes:

Styling Wax - light wax for texture
Sumo Wax - strong wax for texture, hold and shine
Sumo Tech - a water soluble paste - adds body and texture

Sprays:

Classic Hairspray - Aerosol, medium hold
Does It All - Aerosol, light hold - use when styling and curling or straight ironing
Holding Spray - Pump spray - adds medium hold and texture
Extra Strength Holding Spray - strong hold - added texture

Specialty Products:

Surf Spray - Adds lots of body and texture with a matte finish - if you have a darker hair color, apply a dab of Grooming Creme first.

Hair Powders - Dry shampoo in an aerosol form in five colors - great for hiding the grey roots when you don't have time to color. Also, adds lots of body to fine hair.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RssD8OqyJ0I/AAAAAAAAAM8/TzckNdsEitU/s320/(215).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5101175336191797058" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RssB0eqyJzI/AAAAAAAAAM0/-XuLIBi_RAQ/s320/100_0298_0240.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5101173004024555314" />Please stop by Genesis and we'll give you a Bumble Product Book for more detail on the products and what they can do for you!

Genesis Salon & Medical Spa
250 Crummer Lane
Reno, NV 89502
775-828-9797
www.genesissalon.com

Have fun finding all the incredible looks possible with Bumble and bumble.

Dorlon Peckham
Hair Designer

RACHEL - COLOR CODING A HAIR DESIGN

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RsJhWi-j2CI/AAAAAAAAAKg/ytJIgWif1Nc/s320/IMG_1427.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098744768111040546" />

RACHEL is a wife, mother of two beautiful children and a professional business woman.

In regard to Rachel's hair style, she wants something fun and sexy for the evenings and weekends, a professional look for work, and something easy for her many roles.

COLOR CODING provides extraordinary options for today's multifaceted woman. The concept of COLOR CODING is to tie-in the hair color with the haircut. The result? A look that compliments her individualized sense of style.

We start by identifying COLORS that harmonize with and energize Rachel's skin tone, eye color and natural texture. The color swatch on the left drains Rachel while the color swatch on the right harmonizes with her natural coloration.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RsJMjS-j1wI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/fnXxncKvfkA/s200/100_0280_0222.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098721897410189058" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RsJM2y-j1xI/AAAAAAAAAIY/-0H3ip8j_qE/s200/100_0283_0225.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098722232417638162" />

Rachel looks best in deep, rich, warm tones.

With this in mind, I begin designing shapes within the haircut that can later be accented with color.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RsJNei-j1yI/AAAAAAAAAIg/D9iV4-8k4nI/s200/100_0285_0227.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098722915317438242" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RsJN1C-j1zI/AAAAAAAAAIo/T1qlmkW7efs/s200/100_0291_0233.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098723301864494898" />

COLOR CODING Rachel's haircut means applying the color in conjunction with how her hair has been cut. Why is this? If a woman's hair is cut with little or no regard for her hair type, face shape, body type, style personality, lifestyle, profession and/or overall image, it can significantly affect the outcome. If the hair color is wrong, it can make things worse. No amount of make-up or expensive clothes is going to correct bad hair color. It can have a psychological effect on just about every aspect of her life - private/personal/professional.

Have you ever had things "go south" with your hairdresser? We all have. You can have a great stylist and still have a "bad hair day." Get out the baseball cap and try to get through it. But, when "bad hair days" happen time-and-time again, maybe it's time to move on.

Any good hairdresser knows the responsibility she or he has with a client. If the hairdresser doesn't, perhaps a new career choice is in order.

For years I've worked successfully with thousands of women (but sometimes unsuccessfully) when it came to providing what she wanted, needed and expected regarding her hair and her overall image. The mishaps that occurred were usually due to an off day on my part, an off day on the client's part, or a lack of communication.

The purpose of this post is to address ways to successfully build a fruitful, long-term relationship with your stylist(s). Notice the plural on stylist - it's not a typo. Yes, you should have an alternative stylist (or two) in case of an emergency.

Also, I would like to help you relax about going into your salon. I've found common misconceptions among clients in regard to who they should see, what they should say, or not say. Remember, you are the customer.

Some common chatter among unenlightened stylists may sound something like this: "She is my client." This is FALSE! You are not his or her client, he or she is your stylist (period). You can go to whomever you want, whenever you want, and if someone has a problem with it, let the problem be theirs, not yours.

Here are some suggestions that may help you:

Finding a new stylist when you are new to an area
Go shopping - malls and supermarkets are a great place to observe women whose hair is similar to what you like. Don't be shy about asking her for a recommendation. Say this. "I was noticing how great your hair looks. I'm new to the area and I'm looking for a stylist. Do you know of anyone?" Everyone loves a compliment. She will most likely have her stylist's card with her, but if she doesn't, have a pen and paper handy.

Book a consultation first
Meeting your new stylist without the commitment of a color or cut gives you the opportunity to see if there is any chemistry between the two of you. Also, arrive a few minutes early so you can get a sense of the energy within the salon. Bad energy usually breeds contempt! This can be an indicator of what's to come.

Take a few pictures of styles you like
"A picture speaks a thousand words." When discussing a style with your stylist, pictures cut through a lot of dialogue and misunderstanding. Use the picture as a "reference" not a "written in stone" look. You are not the person in the photo. Your hair and face-shape may be different. But, remember the word "reference." This word is powerful when trying to explain what you want. NOTE: Take a few pictures not a photo album. Too many could confuse the issue.

Keep your eyes and ears open
When you are sitting in one stylist's chair, be observant. Your alternative stylist(s) may be sitting a chair or two away. Get to know her or him. From the beginning make it known to your stylist you would like to have the option to book with someone else in case of an emergency. You never know when someone is going to leave the salon or be sick when you need them most.

Your time with your stylist should be, your time. You should feel 100% comfortable in the environment. I like to call it, "The Experience." Hopefully it's a good one!

Interviewing women that have left their stylists are a result of inconsistency, a stylist talking over their heads (using salon lingo that a client doesn't understand), stylists talking about themselves too much, or assuming that a long-time client doesn't want change.

To reiterate one last time, YOU are the customer. If you don't want to talk during the appointment, inform your stylist. If your stylist is a "chatter box" and you just want some down time, tell her or him. This is completely acceptable.

Please feel free to ask or comment on anything. This information is for your benefit.

Sincerely,

Dorlon Peckham
Genesis Salon & Medical Spa
250 Crummer Lane
Reno, NV 89502
775-828-9797
www.genesissalon.com

Finding Your Fragrance

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RqZLTi-j1AI/AAAAAAAAABM/JaBBwoK1iik/s200/Blog+-+Eight+-+Fragrance.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090839227967722498" />
Your Individualized Scent for Your Mood and Body Chemistry

Each week during my health, beauty and hair segment, I try to present information that is informative, fun, playful and helpful to you and your life. Oftentimes, I use “the five senses” as one of the guidelines in my research and preparation. As you will discover, this post will address our aromatic sense.

Basically there are four fragrance categories:

1. Citrus – light and fresh
2. Floral – sweet and strong
3. Earth – simple yet mysterious
4. Musk – heavy and sexy

Each of these fragrance categories sends a different signal (or message) to the more than 40 million olfactory receptor neurons which reside in the olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavity. In other words, what we "smell" can affect our mood, attitude and perceptions.

Based on body chemistry, a fragrance can have dramatic differences from person-to-person. It’s important to try the fragrance first (on you) and give it time to mature. Fragrances are a combination of “notes” with some “notes” lasting longer than others. (i.e. Base note last longest – middle note second longest – top note evaporates first).

What scent works for your friend, may not work for you. For example, oily skin types will hold a fragrance longer and make it stronger than someone with dry skin. A fragrance is designed to last about four hours, however, on someone with an oilier skin type, it may last all day. Apply or reapply appropriately…

Also, when shopping for a fragrance you will find it in basically four different concentrations:

1. Eau de cologne – least concentrated – better for oily skin types
2. Eau de toilette – more concentrated – better for oily skin types
3. Eau de parfum – still more concentrated – better for dry skin types
4. Parfum – most concentrated – better for dry skin types

Things like genetics, skin type, hair color, lifestyle, medications, exercise, smoking, age, climate, time-of-year and environment can all change a fragrance.

Some things to consider:

True Blondes typically have dryer skin types
True Brunettes typically have oilier skin types
True Redheads typically have fair, delicate skin types – beware of green note fragrances as they may be incompatible with your body chemistry (Green Notes are Plant Extracts).

Depending on the occasion, where you apply your fragrance does make a difference. While there are many suggestions as to where to apply a fragrance, the pulse points are great – behind the ears, opposite side of elbow (arm) and opposite side of knee(leg). During increased heart rate, respiration and perspiration these areas will reactivate the fragrances due to moisture and heat.

A fragrance (or smells we experience) can have a combination of the following three effects:

1. Psychological
2. Pharmacological
3. Physiological

Wanna try a fragrance concoction of your own to see how easy it is to make your own personalized aroma?

How about Magic Madness?

Ingredients:

3 drops of sandalwood essential/fragrance oil
2 drops of vanilla essential/fragrance oil
3 drops of cedarwood essential/fragrance oil
15 drops of bergamot essential/fragrance oil
½ pint (300 ml) 70 percent alcohol or vodka

Directions: Pour vodka into a clean, glass container (jar or bottle). Add the oils and shake well. Seal container and leave for one week. Go easy on this stuff, you can always make more…

There are three basic ingredients in making a fragrance:

1. Essential/Fragrance Oils
2. Pure grain alcohol or a good vodka (Don’t drink it… you’ll be wearing it)
3. Your Imagination…

Remember: Base notes last longest, middle notes last second longest and top notes evaporate first…

Have fun!

Dorlon Peckham 
Genesis Salon
775-828-9797
www.genesissalon.com

THE NOTEBOOK

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/Rpz0QFSR9bI/AAAAAAAAABE/-To6rO2GgtM/s200/Makeover+-+Feb+2007+003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088210236155753906" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l2I-u8hWDQU/RpzOgVSR9YI/AAAAAAAAAAo/bh_0U5oP50Y/s200/Blog+-+Four+-+Hairdresser.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088168733886772610" />

WELCOME

YOU are the SUBJECT and YOUR BEAUTY, in all five dimensions, is the TOPIC.

The objectives are:

To provide you with information that is helpful and informative
To provide a sense of community to ask and answer your questions
To present ideas which are inspiring and honest
To assist you in looking and feeling your best
To share health, beauty and fashion inspiration from around the world

Since 1980, education has been the foundation of my career as a hair designer. I was fortunate to work with some of the world’s greatest hair artisans. One in particular, Russell Hyde, shared with me the key elements of hair design, art, beauty, thinking, seeing and where to discover true and endless inspiration. During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I had the opportunity to work, one-on-one, with Russell. I’ve never been the same since.

Also, I discovered another four pieces of the beauty puzzle that changed my perspective on hair design and beauty:

1. Color Analysis
2. Style Personality
3. Face Shapes
4. Body Types

I quickly came to realize TRENDS are secondary to the INDIVIDUALIZED WOMAN. A great haircut or haircolor is only great if it is great for the individual woman.

I began questioning… What is beauty anyway? Is it physical? Is it something a woman is born with? Is it something that can be developed?

We’ve all known someone who we thought was beautiful, untouchable until we got to know her. Then, we found out otherwise.

One the other hand, we’ve also met someone who didn’t appear beautiful at first glance, until we got to know her. Then, out of nowhere, we begin to realize the true meaning of beauty. Wow! She is amazingly beautiful – inside and out.

Since 1980, I’ve had the privilege to work with thousands of women in the salon. In doing so, I’ve come to realize beauty is found, or developed, in five dimensions:

Physical
Spiritual
Mental
Emotional
Social

Beauty can and should be enhanced physically. However, it doesn’t stop or start here. It’s the “graces” in all five dimensions that define beauty.

It’s important to know, there is not such thing as perfection. In fact, it’s the imperfections that are most beautiful and most human – these imperfections are what make a woman most beautiful.

In my opinion, our society has distorted our views “destructively” regarding beauty –especially as we begin to age. Again, it’s not that we shouldn’t do all we can to enhance, protect and preserve beauty. What I’m speaking of is the internal, destructive nature of media hype and what we now have come to believe as truth.

As human beings we take-in and send-out information through our five senses:

Touch
Sight
Sound
Smell
Taste

These five senses give us an endless opportunity to design beautiful experiences to tantalize and revitalize others as well as ourselves.

Sincerely,

Dorlon Peckham
Genesis Salon
775-828-9797
Or visit our Web Site at:
www.genesissalon.com
